On July 21, 2017, the Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs answered the formal questions that were asked by the SP, PvdD and PvdA. These are his answers:
1. Are you familiar with the Clinton Young Foundation, that says that the American Clinton Young, who is going to be executed on October 26, 2017, has been wrongfully convicted for two murders and wrongfully sentenced to death?
2. Do you understand the Foundation’s concerns about this wrongful conviction and about the fact that a lot of things did not go the way they should during his trial?
The Netherlands consistently objects to the most cruel and serious human rights violations, including the death penalty. On EU-level, The Netherlands advocates for a worldwide abolition of the death penalty, but at least a worldwide moratorium on the execution of the death penalty. Also, the EU aims at the application of minimum standards and support for the UN resolutions on the death penalty. Subsequently, The Netherlands supports organizations that fight for abolition of the death penalty.
3. Are you willing to contact the Governor of Texas to ask him to stay Clinton’s execution so that his case can be reviewed?
Dutch policy is to object, on EU level, to the execution of the death penalty in the United States. So also in this case the European objections will be send in the form of a letter to the Governor of Texas through the EU ambassador. Then the Dutch Ambassador in Washington will strengthen this signal by sending a letter to the Governor of Texas as well.
